Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I become a contributor to the Ship’s Log?
A: You must be logged in to create new posts or to comment on existing ones. You may log in only after you are registered. When you complete the registration process, you are automatically registered as a “subscriber.” An e-mail is sent to the Keeper of the Log (KOL), who keeps unpredictable hours. If you qualify, the KOL will change your status to “author,” which means you are free to post or comment at will.
Q: A posting says there are 3 comments. How do I see the comments?
A: You may either click on the linked word “Comments” at the bottom of the post, or you may click on the headline of the post. In either case, you will be taken to a page that displays the original post and the first 10-15 comments. If there are more comments, there will be links.
Q: How do I post a comment on something that has been posted to the Ship’s Log?
A: If you are already viewing the comments (see question above), a question at the end of the comments asks you if you have something to say. If you are not logged in, you are prompted to do so. If you are logged in, you have a dialog box in which to enter your comment. The main site has a tutorial on contributing to the log.
Q: Can I be automatically notified of new postings to the Ship’s Log?
A: If you have current Web browser (Firefox, Safari, Camino, Mozilla, Opera 9 or later, or Internet Explorer 7 or later) you may subscribe to what is known as an “RSS Feed” On the right side column (sidebar), under “Meta,” are two RSS links, one to Entries and one to Comments. Click on whichever one you wish to subscribe to, and follow the instructions.
